What is FAR?
Fez Art Residency exists to position Fez Medina as a place where artists come to grow - creatively, culturally, and professionally. Operating as a collaborative platform, we connect the creative heritage of the Medina with contemporary artistic practice by offering time, space, and context within a living city shaped by craft, history, and spirituality.
Why Fez?
Fez is not a backdrop. It is a city that demands attention, where tradition is lived rather than preserved. The Medina’s craft practices and cultural rhythms create a rare context - a place where contemporary artistic work can be shaped alongside generations of accumulated skill, encouraging artists to think, work, and develop their practice over time.
Who is it for?
Fez Art Residency is for independent, self-directed artists seeking clarity, inspiration, or renewed momentum in their practice. It suits those drawn to place, interested in Morocco’s craft traditions, and prepared to engage intentionally - creatively or professionally - rather than follow a prescribed programme with fixed outcomes.
What We Do
Fez Art Residency is about creating the conditions for growth.
Artists join us looking for space, inspiration, and context - not a programme to follow, but an environment to grow in. We support them to deepen their practice, clarify direction, and to develop creatively and professionally through intentional engagement with the Medina.
In practical terms, this means offering:
  • A grounded base within Fez Medina
  • Time and space to work independently
  • Supported access to a living craft and cultural environment
  • Optional frameworks for reflection, exchange, and professional development
There is no expectation to produce a finished body of work - the emphasis is on development rather than output.
How FAR Works
Fez Art Residency operates as a collaborative platform, not a fixed institution.
There is no standard residency at FAR. We offer a flexible framework that adapts to different practices, career stages, and intentions. Artists join us through several pathways, including:

  • Funded stays and short-term initiatives
  • Paid independent residencies, with accommodation provided
  • Partnered programmes with cultural organisations and hosts
  • Artist-led retreats and immersion weeks, developed collaboratively
Each pathway is shaped through conversation and intent, rather than a standardised package.
What unites all FAR residents is a shared approach:

  • Working independently and with responsibility
  • Approaching practice and place with curiosity and intent
  • Engaging respectfully with the local community and culture

This works best for artists who are comfortable without constant structure, and who value depth over speed once they settle into the rhythm of the Medina.
Working as an Artist in Fez
Fez Art Residency is rooted in Fez Medina, one of the world’s oldest living cultural cities.
Once here, artists find time, space, and context to grow - not as visitors passing through, but as practitioners engaging with a living environment shaped by history, craft, and daily life.

This isn't a residency in the conventional sense, and production isn't the driver. Artists come to Fez to slow their pace, observe closely, and work with attention, positioning their practice within a wider cultural and professional context.
Programmes & Collaborations
Fez Art Residency operates through a flexible framework that adapts to different practices, intentions, and moments.
Alongside independent residencies, we host and collaborate on a small number of focused programmes that explore what it means to work, gather, and grow as artists in Fez.

Each programme is shaped by place, intent, and partnership, and reflects FAR’s broader commitment to depth, independence, and professional as well as creative development.

Retreats at Dar Drouj
Hosted at Dar Drouj, our partner space in Fez Medina, these retreats are artist-led and carefully paced.
Home to Creative Explorers Fez, Dar Drouj is on of the oldest houses in the city, and located just outside the Medina walls.

Each retreat is artist-lead and carefully paced, providing an immersive experience that combines:

  • focused creative practice
  • shared reflection and exchange
  • engagement with the Medina as a living cultural environment

Upcoming Retreats

Join us at Dar Drouj for artistic retreats lead by experts of their field, and hosted in a historic Medina house where artists gather to connect, collaborate, and create.

Host a Retreat
Host a Retreat is FAR’s entrepreneurial and collaborative programme for artists, cultural facilitators, and organisations who want to design and lead their own retreat in Fez.

Learn more about hosting a retreat with FAR here.
Rather than offering a fixed format, FAR works with hosts to shape a retreat that reflects their practice, values, and audience. We support on-the-ground delivery, accommodation, local coordination, and cultural access, while hosts bring their community, vision, and leadership.

This programme is for those ready to:

  • Take responsibility for shaping an experience
  • Market and lead a retreat with intent
  • Work collaboratively within Fez’s cultural context

It is not for everyone, and that clarity is intentional.
